Angouleme Overview |
| Situated on a hilltop between the Charente and Aquienne Rivers and was the main French paper centre during the 17th century; this tradition has carried on today, although on a much smaller scale than previously. It is a town that has seen many wars fought over it. During the 14th century the Anglo-French squabbled over the town and again in the 16th century during the Wars of Religion, when it was a protestant stronghold. This French town is also famous for its French comic strip productions such as Asterix, Tintin and Lucky Luke. |

Angouleme Essentials |
The Cathedrale St-Pierre – This cathedral was started in 1128 and refurbished in the 19th century. It has towers on either side of it and the front of it boasts 75 statues, each with its own place, which represents the Last Judgement. This is probably one of France’s most surprising examples of Romanesque-Byzantine style. Abadie, the 19th century architect tore down the north tower and re-erected it with the same original materials and in the same style. Inside the visitor will find a four-domed ceiling which is quite unique.
The Place de l’Hotel-de-Ville – The building started in 1858 and completed in 1866 is the town hall and is the hub of the town. It was originally the site of the palace of the ducs d’Angouleme and is the place where Marguerite de Navarre, the sister of Francois l was born. Unfortunately all that is left of the palace is the 15th century Tour de Valois and the 13th century Tour de Lusignan.
Centre National de la Bande Dessinee at de l’Image – In this museum the visitor will be find displays dedicated to famous cartoons and their creation, which are today part of French life. It is a must for those creative people interested in cartoons as they will get a good insight into the entertainment industry. There is also a library, café and bookshop.
The Promenade des Remparts – This Boulevard has been laid on the site of the walls that once surrounded the town and which were demolished. The visitor can stroll along the boulevard and from certain points along the way will have some excellent views over the valley below.
La Rochefoucauld – This large Renaissance chateau is located on the banks of the River Tardoire about 22km east of Angouleme. The chateau has an elaborate gateway and is open to the public. This stately home is still owned by the family, who a thousand years ago gave their name to the town. In August there is a massive son et lumiere with an extra large cast held at the chateau. |
