Annecy Overview |
Situated on the edge of a lake and lies between the routes to Italy and Geneva. This resort town in the Haute Savoie province is surrounded on one side by the Aravis mountain chain and the Albanais plain on the other. It is a city full of history and has managed to retain its natural setting even though it is also an industrial centre.
Annecy has one of the best views of mountains and lakes in the French Alps as well as the still wild Semnoz forest. It is the capital of the region and is the best place to set up base camp for touring the province. In summer it is a bustling town with the lakefront promenade very active and crowded. |

Annecy Essentials |
Chateau de Montrottier – This chateau built in the 13th and 14th centuries is within walking distance of the gorges. It is moderately protected by the rugged environment around it and the tower of this once feudal fortress has a wonderful view over Mont Blanc. There is a small museum inside where the visitor will find displays of pottery, Asian costumes, tapestries, armour and antiques. There are also some bronze bas-reliefs dating from the 16th century.
Musee Chateau d’Annecy – This grey-stone monument has a pinnacle which was built in the 12th century and is called the Queen’s Tower. The chateau has a very forbidding appearance and dominates the resort. Inside the chateau is a museum which contains regional artefacts such as Alpine furniture, religious art, oil paintings and modern works. Here the visitor will also find a section which shows the geology and marine life of the deep, cold lakes of the region.
Auberge de I’Eridan – This world-class restaurant located in the village of Vevrier-du Lac and situated on the edge of the lake is about 1.5km from Annecy. Here the diner will have a unique dining experience as there is almost a ritual on how the meal should be eaten. They serve excellent and unusual cuisine such as pike-perch sausages, crayfish poached with bitter almonds or ravioli with three different cheeses or vegetable ravioli which is flavoured with rare Alpine herbs. They also have a variety of desserts and the wine list is excellent.
Saint Peter’s Cathedral – The Cathedral was built at the beginning of the 16th century by Jacques Rossel and served as the chapel for the Franciscan convent. During the Revolution it was transformed into a temple for the goddess ‘Reason’, but in 1822 due to pressure by the residents of Annecy it once again became a cathedral.
The Saint-Francis of Sales Church – This church holds the remains of Saint Francis of Sales and Saint Joan of Chantal both of whom were the founders of this church. Before 1794 when this area was occupied by the French, the church was transformed into a barracks. In 1794 it became a workshop and stayed as such until 1888. It was not until 1923 that religious services were held in the church, it then became a church of the Italian parish. People from all over Europe make a pilgrimage to the entombed remains of St Francis and St Joan.
