Arles Overview |
Situated in the Bouches du Rhone province of France and is approximately 35km south west of Avignon. Arles is a town that attracts art lovers, archaeologists and historians and is known as “the soul of Provence”. It is said that the Greeks founded the town in the 6th century B.C. It wasn’t until 1481 that Arles was incorporated into France.
In 1888 Van Gogh left Paris and became a resident of Arles and some of his most celebrated works were painted in this town. Arles is probably not as lovely as it was during his time but it still has enough antique charm to appeal to visitors. It boasts some of the best museums; superb restaurants and summer festivals to make it well worth a visit. |

Arles Essentials |
Eglise St-Trophime – This 12th century church can be found on the east side of the square in Arles and is one of the finest accomplishments of the southern Romanesque style. In the triangular, gable there is an excellent sculpture of Christ surrounded by the symbols of the Evangelists. In 1178 Frederick Barbarossa was crowned king of Arles on this same site. The cloister is built in both the Gothic and Romanesque styles and is known for its medieval cravings.
Musee de I’Arles Antique – This museum located on the Presquile du Cirque Roman was opened in 1995 and has one of the world’s most famous Roman Christian sarcophagi. There is also a rich collection of sculptures, mosaics and inscriptions on display. Most of the exhibits are form the Augustinian period to the 6th century A.D. The museum also has detailed models as they existed in the past of ancient monuments of the region.
Theatre Antique – The Theatre Antique is one of Arles’s classical monuments. It was constructed in the 1st century by Augustus, a Roman, but was mostly destroyed except for two Corinthian columns that still remain. In 1651 the famous Venus of Arles was discovered in the theatre, unfortunately it was broken in three pieces and armless. This masterpiece of Hellenistic statuary was offered to Louis XIV, who had it restored and today it stands in the Louvre in Paris.
Amphitheatre (les Arenas) - The Amphitheatre is the second of Arles’s classical monuments and is located very close to the Theatre Antique. The amphitheatre was also built in the 1st century and bullfights are still held here today during the summer. The amphitheatre has seating for almost 25,000, however, visiting this monument is done at your own risk as many of the stone steps are uneven and the masonry is worn down making it a bit risky. There are also three towers at the amphitheatre which can be climbed for a spectacular view of the area.
Thermes de Constantin – This 4th century Roman bath is located near the banks of the Rhone River. The Palais Constantin, a once grand imperial palace stood here, but all that remains of it now are the Roman baths or Thermae. These baths have been partially restored and are the largest that remain in Provence. |

Arles Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
