| This lively market town is the capital of the Gers province and is approximately 78km east of Toulouse. The town is divided into two parts an upper and lower quarter. The upper quarter is the old town and stands on a bluff overlooking the tree-lined Gers River and is worth exploring. It has narrow streets and an excellent view of the Pyrenees. Unfortunately the lower quarter of the town hasn’t very much to offer, so the main concentration would be in the upper quarter of Auch. |

Cathedrale Ste-Marie – This cathedral makes a visit to Auch worthwhile. It was only finished near the end of the 17th century and was built mostly in the Gothic style. The choir stalls made of carved oak are extremely interesting as are the stained glass windows which were began in the early 1500’s. The choir stalls are mainly Gothic whereas the windows are more Renaissance. There are 18 windows in total and parallel the scenes and persons represented in the stalls. The work was done by Arnaud de Moles, a Gascon painter and are rich in detail.
Tour d’Armagnac – This forty metre tower is found just south of the cathedral in the tree-filled Place Salinis, which is in the old town situated in the upper quarter. It once served as a religious court and prison during the 14th century. Unfortunately, the tower together with the 18th century Archbishop’s Palace is not open to the public.
Rue Dessoles and Ave Alsace – These two streets are where the visitor will find most of the shops and boutiques of Auch. There is everything from confectionery shops to clothing stores here and a visit to the Caves de l’Hotel de France is worth a visit to buy a bottle of Armagnac. It has the best selection liquor, representing more than 100 distilleries.
Musee des Jacobins – This former convent turned museum also known as the Musee d’Auch has one of the best collections of pre-Columbian and South American art in France. This collection was left to the town by M. Pujos, an adventurous resident who lived in Chile during the latter 19th century. There is also an interesting, but small collection of traditional Gascon furniture, religious artefacts and Gallo-Roman remains.
Place de la Republique – This Square found in front of the cathedral’s main west door connects with the rue d’Espagne and the rue de la Convention where the visitor will find what is left of the narrow medieval stairways known as the pousterles, that consists of 234 steps that lead you down to the lower part of town. Here the visitor will find a statue of d’Artagnan on one of the terraces. The Tourist office located in a superb half timbered 15th century house is situated on the north side of the square. |

Circa – This festival held in October in Auch is a modern circus organised by the National Schools and various French circus companies.
Jazz in Marciac – This is a must for jazz fans. Every year in August the village of Marciac which is not far from Auch holds this celebrated jazz festival and features both national and international musicians. |
