| Capital of the Beauce, lies 96 km to the south-west of Paris. It offers a variety of countryside landscapes, forests, small valleys and lakes, the plain of the Beauce and the hills of the Perche. It boasts the most beautiful and the largest cathedral in Europe which is listed as a World Heritage Site. Churches like Saint Aignan, leaning against the ramparts of the upper town and the Saint Pierre abbey church, in the lower town, have beautiful stained glass windows. The history of Chartres and its inhabitants through the centuries, lie in its picturesque streets, its old bridges and its hillocks. |

The Notre-Dame Cathedral in Chartres - This cathedral is a magnificent representation of 12th and 13th century art and is the most complete and best preserved Gothic cathedral. It was built and added on to between 1134 and 1260. During the early middle ages, the cathedral had to be rebuilt at least five times. All that remains of today are a few sections of the walls and the site of the ‘Saint-Lubin’ crypt. It was added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites in 1979.
Maison Picassiette - This house is an extraordinary example of naïve art. The house, a strange, colourful, glittering mosaic, was completely decorate, inside and out, with mosaics made from pieces of broken crockery and bits of earthenware and porcelain. The real name of the owner was Raymond Isidore, but he was given the nickname of Picassiette. Roughly translated it means both "plate stealer" and the "Picasso of plates". It is unimaginable how many broken plates, crockery and various sorts of glass he had to collect to complete his project.
Centre International du Vitrail - This unique centre is housed in the former "Grange aux Dîmes", a listed Medieval storehouse. It reveals the secrets of the art of stained glass windows. The complex and fascinating techniques of this art are demonstrated and all the stages involved in the creation of a stained glass window are explained in a lively and comprehensive way. This art form is very much alive in Chartres today. This is an unforgettable discovery of the world of tainted glass makers from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Le Grenier de l'Histoire - Different historical events are depicted with models in civil and military costumes, from the time of St. Louis up to the present day. Historical scenes with are represented by costumes, helmets documents and arms. All the exhibits are completely authentic also include a collection of head coverings from armies, police forces, civil service, as well as flags and arms.
Parks and gardens - Chartres is recognised for its fantastic display of flowers (awarded 4 ‘flowers’ in the 2004 classification of French towns and villages). The town boasts numerous parks and gardens. Take a walk along the flower-decked paths that follow the banks of the Eure where you will discover a multitude of gardens with sweet-smelling and diverse varieties of flowers and plants. |
