| Situated at the tip of the Contentin peninsula, Cherbourg was of major importance during WWII, but today serves mainly as a point of departure, or arrival, for the ferries transporting visitors to and from England and Ireland. There are hotels and cheap accommodation available, as well as some historical sites that help while away a few spare hours between ferries. |

La Citie de la Mer – This is an excellent attraction with underwater displays and interactive exhibits of sonar, sharks, scuba diving, and a guided tour of a nuclear submarine.
Abbaye du Voeu – The partially ruined 12th century Abbaye du Voeu and its gardens, lie on the western edge of town.
Basillique de la Trinite – With foundations laid in the 11th century this stately church displays a variety of architectural styles spanning the centuries.
Nightlife – There are bars and pubs galore where visitors are welcomed warmly and multilingual crowds gather nightly to enjoy each other’s company.
