Colmar Overview |
Located in the upper Verdon river valley 28 km north of St Andre-les-Alps and 65 km from Strasbourg, Colmar is a fortified village circled by stone defensive walls. Inside the walled village are cobbled medieval streets and old houses in line with its medieval background. One these houses, now a museum, was home to Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi the creator of the Statue of Liberty in New York. The town is named after hill on which it is built, collis Martis.
The town is at the confluence of the Lance and Verdon rivers. The surrounding mountains are thickly forested amid streams, lakes and waterfalls. The region, including the nearby Parc du Mercantour has a variety of alpine flora and fauna. Colmar, a major stopover from Strasbourg, is the Alsace’s most gorgeous city and apart from its hotels, restaurants and the like, produces some of the finest wines in the world. |

Musee d'Unterlinden - On 1 rue Underlinden is this museum that was converted from a 13th century Dominican Convent. The best exhibits are scenes depicting the cruxification and other scenes from Christ's life. Musee Bartholdhi - This museum displays the personal art collection, drawings and models of Frederic Auguste Bartholdhi (1834 - 1904) who was born here and is best known for his 47 m statue of his mother called, Liberty Enlighting the World which is best known as the Statue of Liberty. There are plans, scale models and documents pertaining to its construction as well as other US historical works.
Collegiale St Martin - This church is very ordinary on the outside. Inside, it looks more like a museum than a church with its interesting art. It is located on pl.de la Cathedrale.
St Martin Church – Built 1235 – 1356 is an outstanding example of Gothic architecture. There are also many exquisite finer details to look out for such as the fine sculptured portals.
Route de Vin - Along a winding 170km bordering the foothills of the Vosges lies the Alsace Wine Route. Your journey will take you through the most beautiful villages with many a ruined castle to behold.
