Draguignan Overview |
The city of Draguignan evolved during one of the numerous historical depressions, and is the largest town on the Route de Vin with a population of 32 851. Situated not far from the thrill of the Côte d'Azur, this lovely rural town with it's Medieval remains, is steeped in character and heritage.
Tourism and textiles are the major industries and it has a great climate, a healthy selection of sport and leisure activities and interesting places to visit, such as the Museum of the Artillery which carries an enormous collection of ancient artillery and depicts life size battlefields to give visitors the feel of the “real thing”. |

Draguignan Essentials |
Musee des Arts et Traditions Populaire - Housed in a building that dates back to the 17th century, this museum showcases the region's social and economic history and is highly recommended for its cultural heritage exploration as well as its enormous media library. It is in de Moyenne Provence in the town centre, on 15 rue Joseph Roumanville.
The Old Town - The streets of the Old Town, which are pedestrianised, are interesting for wandering through for a sense of the Medieval times. It has a 24 m (79ft) tower that was built in 1963 and next to the tower is the little open air, Theatre de Verdure. The food market, Place du Marche, has wonderful things on offer like olive bread and nut bread, various cheeses and olives.
Chemin de Malmont - This offers great views of Draguignan, spread out below backed by low hills and distant mountains. You can get there on foot from the town centre as a hike. If you are driving you go along the old Roman road, with its distinct edging stones, that are an attraction in themselves.
The Museum of the Artillery - Depicts an awesome collection of ancient artillery, ammunition and historic reconstructions. Life size slide shows and battlefields give visitors the opportunity to measure the human dimension of those times.
The Clock Tower - This 18 metre clock dominates the cliffs of Draguignan and symbolises the power of the city.
Pierre de la Fée - This is the gigantic remains of a large stone grave (+- 25 tons) dedicated to Pierre de la Fée who owes his name to the legend of the fairy Estérelle and queen Jean de Notre (X11 century).
Chapel and the Convent of the Observance – Built in 1501 this is a marvellous tourist attraction with its enormous artistic and cultural heritage. |
