| Now, a quiet provincial city with a population of 47,000, Narbonne was once the busy capital of Rome’s first French colony. With most of its ancient architecture in ruin the only indication of its former glory is the enormous incomplete Cathedral St-Just et St-Pasteur, but the city is trying to revive its fortunes and market their assets astutely, including among them the sands of Narbonne-Plage and Gruisson-Plage, and opening the wine caves (cellars) for tourists.

Cathedrale St-Just et St-Pasteur – This really imposing Gothic church is only half it’s originally intended size but still makes an awe-inspiring impact.
Narbonne Plage – 15km east of Narbonne, lays the town’s finest asset, with gorgeous sand, and sun nearly every day of the year.
Palais des Archeveques – Within the walls of the lavishly restored Palais is the Musee Archeologique with a collection of artefacts dating from stone-age man.
The Musee d’Art et Histoire – A large collection of French, Flemish and Italian 17th century paintings are housed in the elegant apartments in the Palais.
L’Horreum –Narbonne’s one remaining ancient monument is a Roman grain warehouse that is still under excavation.
