Rochefort came into being when the Harbour of Brouage silted up and Colbert chose a site 15 km from the mouth of the Charente River for a new naval base and dockyard. |

The Naval Dockyard - Erected in 1666 the naval dockyard extends along the Charente River where great sea going vessels were built until its closure in 1926.
The Royal Rope Factory - The magnificent building in the middle of the dockyard was built in 1666 and has displays of industrial equipment and materials of the period.
Place Colbert -The town centre is attractive and the rue Courbet perfectly preserved in seventeenth century charm with lime trees and cobblestones.
Aerial Ferry - Built in 1900 the old aerial ferry of Martrou was created to provide a means of crossing the river above the naval goings on.
Transport - With the erratic bus service in Rochefort it would be best to either cycle or rent a vehicle to explore the surrounding coastline. |
